Sinkholes along the seafront (casas 30-31 and 44 to 52): please keep away
Update, Tuesday, October 27.
The damage at casa 47 has spread to casa 48: the sea is pulling the soil out from under the seawall and the walkway, and there are already gaps under the patio slab. Please do not stand on the walkway or the patios at 47 and 48; the slab can look solid and be hollow underneath. The coastal flood warning runs until Thursday at 1 p.m.
Halloween, Saturday, October 31: please keep children away from the entrance to casa 47 and from the seafront patios and walkway. There is already a gap under the walkway by the street, and it cannot be seen at night. More tape is going up.
Seafront map: below are the house numbers from south to north, with the open and closed beach accesses and the damaged stretches.
Update, Monday, October 26.
This is the front row at this morning's high tide (a neighbor's drone video). The high tides continue through Thursday morning; please stay off patios and the walkway around those times.
Update, Saturday afternoon, October 24.
Neighbors who walked the front row from casa 47 to 60 report two more decks lost last night. Several owners are working on their seawalls, and the board has cleared workers to be on site at any time this weekend for seawall repairs. The seawall at casa 30 has started to crack. The photos below are from today.
Update, Saturday, October 24.
The patio at casa 44 collapsed this morning. The highest tides of the month start tomorrow, Sunday, and run through Thursday morning (times below). Please stay off seafront patios and the walkway around those times.
Update, Friday, October 23.
The sea is cutting a cave under the beach stairs at casas 30 and 31, and part of casa 30's foundation is now exposed. The access between casas 30 and 31 remains closed. Yesterday at low tide the water was still reaching the seawalls of the homes on the north end.
The highest tides of the month come Sunday to Thursday mornings (NOAA, Imperial Beach station, the closest to us):
• Sunday 25: 8:48 AM, 6.2 ft • Monday 26: 9:18 AM, 6.5 ft • Tuesday 27: 9:51 AM, 6.6 ft • Wednesday 28: 10:29 AM, 6.5 ft • Thursday 29: 11:13 AM, 6.3 ft
If you live on the seafront, please stay off your patio and the walkway for a couple of hours on either side of those times. If you own a seafront home and are away, this is a good week to have someone check the base of your seawall.
Update, Wednesday morning, October 22.
The sinkhole in front of casa 47 has now reached the front door. Casa 48 is also damaged and the patio wall at casa 45 has cracked. The sea took the steps of the beach access between casas 46 and 47, which is closed until further notice (see the separate post). The area is taped off and more tape is going up.
Please stay off the walkway in front of casas 45 to 52.
Update, Tuesday night, October 20.
The waves washed out the ground under the seafront walkway in front of casa 47. The terrace there collapsed and the area is now taped off. Casa 48 is also affected, and the beach stairs at casas 50 and 52 collapsed around 8:25 PM. Security says the area by casas 30 and 31 may be at the same risk. Residents also report a sinkhole on the abandoned lot by casa 38 that keeps getting bigger.
Please stay off the seafront patios, the walkway and the beach stairs, especially at night, and keep children and pets away. Do not cross the yellow tape.
The low water pressure tonight is not coming from these houses: their meters were checked and none were running. CESPT says an aqueduct broke in Rosarito; see the separate post about the water.
How to check your seawall. Neighbors at casas 55 to 60 had the same problem and caught it in time. The damage does not show from the top of the patio, so look at the bottom of the seawall:
If water seeps in at the base and takes a few seconds to come back out, there are holes or cavities forming under the patio that trap the water.
When the water comes back out it carries soil from under the patio, little by little.
To confirm, have someone drill a small hole in the patio floor. In every one of their cases it showed the cavity underneath.
Refilling the patio and reinforcing the base of the seawall early is much cheaper than repairing it after it collapses.
If you own a front-row house and are not in Baja del Mar, the board recommends coming to check it in person as soon as you can. Do not rely only on someone checking it for you.
If you live along the seafront and see new cracks, gaps under the slabs or sinking, please message the office on WhatsApp at +52 (661) 612-5042.
